MEET THE RESCUES
“Saving one horse won’t change the world, but it will change the world for that one horse.” -Unknown
If you are interested in one of our rescues we would be happy to discuss them in depth via messaging or phone.
If you are interested in a particular horse and would like to meet them to see if they are a good fit, we DO REQUIRE a submitted and approved adoption application. Our rescue is 100% volunteer. To manage our time efficiently, meet and greets are by appointment only.
Adoption fees are subject to change for sound horses- the more training they get, the more fees may increase with level of training.

RED HOT CHILI PEPPER (Kody)
Kody the day he arrived.
Kody December 13, 2025 at Jingle Mingle
Kody came to us on October 20, 2025 as an owner surrender from Wisconsin, in the Watertown area, originally Minnesota. He was surrendered due to a change in life circumstances. Kody is an OTTB and is 14 years old, and 16.2h tall. He has a lip tattoo, but previous owner was unable to figure out “who he was” even with the help of the Jockey Club. He hasn’t been with many horses as he was pastured with one pasture mate for a while, and then on his own, but seems to be middle of the herd here. He will paw or crib when he is nervous, he has only shown us the pawing. His current job was hunter jumper, and was jumping in Minnesota local shows and some rated shows. He seemed to really enjoy jumpers courses according to his previous owner. It is apparent to us already that he is a silly boy. He was so deeply loved by his previous family, and we are honored to be able to get to know him to find him his forever home.
ADOPTION STATUS: Kody is available for adoption.
Adoption Fee: $2,500
We are currently accepting applications for Kody.
OCTOBER 2025 UPDATE: Kody is an incredible horse. Under saddle, Kody is an absolute pleasure — responsive, athletic, and eager to please. His previous experience as a hunter/jumper shows in his natural ability and enthusiasm for fences. He was last comfortably jumping 2’9”–3’3” and would love to continue in a similar direction with a confident rider. Kody does well both in the arena and out on the trail, especially when he has a buddy along for company. He’s middle of the herd in turnout and is still learning how to just be a horse after his racing and show careers. He has great manners for the vet and farrier and generally good ground manners overall. Trailering takes a little extra patience — he’s not naughty, just a bit stubborn at times. Like many OTTBs, Kody prefers turnout to a stall. Stalls tend to make him anxious, and he may crib when confined. When excited, he also tends to paw, but with consistency and understanding, he settles nicely. Kody is looking for an experienced and patient partner who can appreciate his heart, talent, and try. If you’re searching for a horse with athleticism, personality, and tons of potential — Kody just might be your guy.
JANUARY 2026 UPDATE: Kody is doing amazing. He has been spending the last month just learning how to be a horse and a good member of the herd. He has settled in wonderfully, and has such a calm demeanor. He absolutely loves kids, and was a crowd favorite at our Jingle Mingle. Last ridden in November, footing has been less than ideal here, but he is happy to just hang out right now.
KASIDA GRACE (Grace)
Grace’s arrival January 2, 2026
Grace’s arrival January 2, 2026
Grace came to us on January 2, 2026 as an owner surrender. Her previous owner had pulled her from the Columbus Kill Pen, so not much is known. Her Coggins was not actually for her, so we aren’t sure where she even actually came from. We were told she is approximately 4 years old, and she stands at 14.1h. We will verify age with the vet when we check her teeth. She is a clean slate, currently learning how to connect. While she is in quarantine we will work on putting on some more weight and muscle, and start her evaluations to learn her temperament so we know what type of home she would be best suited for.
ADOPTION STATUS: Grace is completing quarantine, and finishing evaluations.
Adoption Fee: TBD
We are currently accepting applications for Grace.
OPALESCENCE MARIE(Opal)
Opal January 1, 2026
Opal January 1, 2026
Opal came to us from a rescue situation. She is approximately 20 years old and has some trust issues that we are trying to work through. Until she is a well behaved citizen, she will remain with us, and will not be available for adoption. While she is cute, she does sometimes breathe fire.
ADOPTION STATUS: Opal is undergoing training. She is not available for adoption
Adoption Fee: TBD
We are not currently accepting applications for Opal.
RESCUE AMBASSADOR
(NOT AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION)
NWR Sergeant Trooper (Sarge)
SARGE’S ARRIVAL - SEPTEMBER 3, 2021
July 18, 2025
Sarge was pulled from a Louisiana kill pen in September 2021, the day before he was to be shipped to slaughter, and right after Hurricane Ida went through. All we were told was that he was a yearling. He was the most fantastic horse we have encountered from the get go. Calm, curious, and sweet from the start, he still maintains those qualities to this day.
Sarge is a PERMANENT AMBASSADOR of North Winds Rescue. He not only the reason we started the rescue, but he is the face of the rescue. Sarge is the best horse to put in with our other rescues post quarantine, so we can see how the new rescues interact with other horses. It helps us establish how they will do with other horses, and what type of herd dynamic they will strive with. It is for this reason that Sarge will always call North Winds Rescue his home.
RESIDENT OF NORTH WINDS RESCUE HEALING PROGRAM

NWR WYATT RIPP (Rebel)
Rebel’s Listing Photo November 7, 2023
July 18, 2025
Rebel came to us November 8, 2023 from a pen in Minnesota. Rebel was said to be 5 months old, who came from a South Dakota Reservation. He seems to have had limited contact with people and is very nervous, in fact, he just hid behind his “brother” Chief. We seperated the two for a little while, and Rebel quickly became attached to Gregory (Valorie’s son). Gregory was the first person he touched, and Gregory was the first one that he took a treat from. After that Rebel became VERY social. He loves attention, and he loves to smell your breath. When we listed Rebel for adoption, Gregory was very upset and we discussed him adopting Rebel. Another horse had always been “in the cards”, but not a baby. But when you see that type of bond - you can’t NOT nourish it. So, Rebel is now part of our forever family.
Rebel will be part of the North Winds Healing program, and Gregory’s horse. Welcome to the family Rebel!!
